Critque 2 : Precedent Studies of ARTag

The video below is ARTag Mirror Image Augmented Reality

Critque 2 : Analysis

I've done a survey online to collect information if potential users of this project will be interested or not with the idea using augmented reality application to do online shopping. Click here to get to the survey questions.

Most of the participants agree to the idea of using augmented reality while shopping online and would like to experience it first hand. One participant however says no and questioned if by using AR application, will it be able to view the clothes in 360 degrees view. My response to that is yes.

In the research that I've done below, it is possible with ARTag. ARTag Mirror Image method uses tags pattern to generated 3D illusions on the real time video. While it is stamped all over the body, it is able perform a 360 degree view to the user.

Critque 2 : Idea Development and Research

There are a few ideas to create this AR Fitting Room;

1. Using ARTag "Magic Mirror" System

2. Using Flash CS4, supported by Actionscript 3.0

3. Using QR Code Calibration Augmented Reality

Using ARTag "Magic Mirror" System

ARTag is an Augmented Reality system where virtual objects, games, and animations appear to enter the real world. 3D graphics is added in real time to video with Augmented Reality it is happening online.

ARTag "Magic Mirror" system use arrays of the square ARTag markers added to objects or the environment allowing a computer vision algorithm to calculate the camera "pose" in real time, allowing the computer graphics virtual camera to be aligned. This gives the illusion of 3D animations or video games to appear to belong in the real world.

Using Flash CS4, supported by Actionscript 3.0

Creating an augmented reality with Flash CS4 is possible in which a webcam will capture the user, holding a marker image in an arbitrary position, and the application will augment the webcam feed with a 3D model overlaid onto the marker's position in a believable way.

Flash Player handles the heavy lifting such as video input, pixel-level image manipulation, and the heavy number crunching afforded with ActionScript 3. All that is needed to make this work done is a webcam, a few open source libraries, and Flash CS4. Marker image also is a part of this method, since the webcam will be needed to scan the image and will project image through a real-time video.

Example of a marker image.

And example of what the marker image will turned out to be what a webcam detects it

after the marker image is detected and translated..

Critque 2 : Precedent Studies of Augmented Reality

What is Augmented Reality? (AR)

Augmented reality (AR) is a field of computer science that involves combining the physical world and an interactive, three-dimensional virtual world.

How does AR works?

The video above is an example of how AR works and what exactly it looks like.

Online Shopping with Augmented Reality

My apologies for not updating the blog earlier.

So as proposed, the 3rd proposal for my FYP has been stamped approve by my lecturers. So here I am to describe how the project installation gonna look like.

Normally when e-shoppers browse around a web shop, for instance, eBay, they will just going to click around and browse to see the pictures of their potential clothes that they going to purchase looks like. Some blog shops post up models wearing their clothing that they want to sell. Particularly like the picture below.

source : http://www.jessica10260.com

Based on the picture above, it clearly shows how the top looks like worn by the model.

What I'm here to propose here is that, why not we let the e-shoppers try the cloth themselves, online before purchasing it?

How? By creating a virtual fitting room, using augmented reality (AR). With AR, e-shoppers can see themselves in the a particular clothing, just like they see themselves in a fitting room of a shopping mall.

Proposal 3

Title

Choose 'n' Match

Background

Online shopping has becoming a trend in our country. It's so much easier than to go out to shopping mall and look for their choice of clothing. It's also helps shopper to save more money on traveling and for driver, saves more gas and at the same time reduce the usage of gas that will be released in the air and thus saves the environment at the same time.

Problem Identification

It is hard to make sure that certain clothing that we shopped online fits exactly our size.

Aim and objectives

To improvise the way people to shop online

Motivation

Online blog shops now usually upload certain sizes of the clothing but did not put the exact cutting measurements and confuses the shoppers whether or not he choice of clothing they did fits them or not.

Ideation and Concept

Shoppers can choose varieties of clothing more efficient. Shoppers can try out the clothes and if they don't like it they can simply push it aside. If the like it they can put it in a cart.

Design Concept

Augmented Reality. Real-Time Camera Detection

Title

Stop Smoking, More Money

Background

A pack of cigarette now has increased/ People need to realized that they need to stop smoking not only for the sake of their health but also for their daily needs.

Problem Identification

It's hard to stop smoking even if there is price increment for cigarettes.

Aim and Objectives

Top open the eyes of smokers about how good it is for them to stop smoking not only for their health but also their wallet and bank account.

Motivation

As a smoker myself, I understand best about being a smoker and the situation where you choose to buy a cigarette pack or a day's meal, everyday. Now that the price has already increased, its getting harder to spend on a pack with a little monthly budget.

Ideation and Concept

User's will get to experience a simulation where, given a specific amount of money they have, they need to choose either to smoke or to buy food. To interact with either options, user will need to touch on objects that will be identified by the camera. The camera will detect any touch or movement on the object. In the simulation, the user will be given, say about 5 days with about only RM60 to manage their simulation and will experience the consequences if they do choose to buy cigarettes.

Design Concept

Real time object detection, game simulation.

Proposals

These are the 3 proposals I proposed last Thursday, which is on 28th October 2010. Unfortunately I couldn't proposed earlier because I was insisted to meed my elder brother and yes I know it's unreasonable and I should email my lecturers about this earlier.

Proposal 1

status : rejected.

Title
eSports

Background
eSports now has become a culture to the young generation all around the world. Adults, largely parents, need to understand the culture and encourage their children interest in competitive gaming sports as how they encourage them to study and to participate themselves in co-curriculum events.

Problem Identification

Gaming is a waste of time and it's a useless hobby. Parents prefer their childen to spend more time on their studies and co-curriculum sports and eventually hoping the best out of it from them.

Aim and Objectives

To introduce the highest level of competitive gaming and taking it as the same level of ordinary sports event, also to innovate gamers from taking it as a usual hobby to carry themselves on competitive stage.

Motivation

eSports in Malaysia has been an underground phenomena for a long time. As a competitive gamer myself who had won countless titles and trophies in tournaments, locals need to know the achievement of our local gamers and how much they contributed themselves to the country, as they have waved the Jalur Gemilang in the highest stage of competitive gaming events.

Ideation and Concept
Users can interact with the program, and there are few levels for them to finish. The higher level they got themselves through, the harder the game is. After the game is finished, user's gaming skills will be measured based on how much points per level they scored.

Welcome!

Welcome to my Digital Media Design Project blog! My name is Daniel Jangin, but I will refer myself as deevon or my gaming alias initial, dvn all the time.

The purpose of this blog is solely for my Digital Media's final year project. All the content that will be put into will be my proposal, researches and all the content that is related to my FYP topic research.

Design of this blog layout may be change from time to time, depends on my mood swing or if there are any request to redecorate page. Will do that, for sure but currently I have no idea whatsoever what to put here -_- so just bear with me.

Sincerely
