Critque 2 : Precedent Studies of ARTag

The video below is ARTag Mirror Image Augmented Reality

Critque 2 : Analysis

I've done a survey online to collect information if potential users of this project will be interested or not with the idea using augmented reality application to do online shopping. Click here to get to the survey questions.

Most of the participants agree to the idea of using augmented reality while shopping online and would like to experience it first hand. One participant however says no and questioned if by using AR application, will it be able to view the clothes in 360 degrees view. My response to that is yes.

In the research that I've done below, it is possible with ARTag. ARTag Mirror Image method uses tags pattern to generated 3D illusions on the real time video. While it is stamped all over the body, it is able perform a 360 degree view to the user.

Critque 2 : Idea Development and Research

There are a few ideas to create this AR Fitting Room;

1. Using ARTag "Magic Mirror" System

2. Using Flash CS4, supported by Actionscript 3.0

3. Using QR Code Calibration Augmented Reality

Using ARTag "Magic Mirror" System

ARTag is an Augmented Reality system where virtual objects, games, and animations appear to enter the real world. 3D graphics is added in real time to video with Augmented Reality it is happening online.

ARTag "Magic Mirror" system use arrays of the square ARTag markers added to objects or the environment allowing a computer vision algorithm to calculate the camera "pose" in real time, allowing the computer graphics virtual camera to be aligned. This gives the illusion of 3D animations or video games to appear to belong in the real world.

Using Flash CS4, supported by Actionscript 3.0

Creating an augmented reality with Flash CS4 is possible in which a webcam will capture the user, holding a marker image in an arbitrary position, and the application will augment the webcam feed with a 3D model overlaid onto the marker's position in a believable way.

Flash Player handles the heavy lifting such as video input, pixel-level image manipulation, and the heavy number crunching afforded with ActionScript 3. All that is needed to make this work done is a webcam, a few open source libraries, and Flash CS4. Marker image also is a part of this method, since the webcam will be needed to scan the image and will project image through a real-time video.

Example of a marker image.

And example of what the marker image will turned out to be what a webcam detects it

after the marker image is detected and translated..

viola. :D

Critque 2 : Precedent Studies of Augmented Reality

What is Augmented Reality? (AR)

Augmented reality (AR) is a field of computer science that involves combining the physical world and an interactive, three-dimensional virtual world.

How does AR works?

The video above is an example of how AR works and what exactly it looks like.

Online Shopping with Augmented Reality

My apologies for not updating the blog earlier.

So as proposed, the 3rd proposal for my FYP has been stamped approve by my lecturers. So here I am to describe how the project installation gonna look like.

Normally when e-shoppers browse around a web shop, for instance, eBay, they will just going to click around and browse to see the pictures of their potential clothes that they going to purchase looks like. Some blog shops post up models wearing their clothing that they want to sell. Particularly like the picture below.

Based on the picture above, it clearly shows how the top looks like worn by the model.

What I'm here to propose here is that, why not we let the e-shoppers try the cloth themselves, online before purchasing it?

How? By creating a virtual fitting room, using augmented reality (AR). With AR, e-shoppers can see themselves in the a particular clothing, just like they see themselves in a fitting room of a shopping mall.
